UTS Sport approached us with a clear objective: create a series of films that would authentically showcase what it's like to balance university studies while competing as an elite athlete. We developed a concept and created two documentary-style films that captured the realities of life inside the UTS Elite Athlete Program (EAP). The goal wasn't to create a traditional promotional video, but to tell genuine stories that prospective students could connect with.

I spent the day with Australian representative water polo player Olivia Mitchell and elite middle-distance runner Luke Boyes, capturing the commitment, discipline and support required to succeed both in sport and at university.

To keep the production as authentic as possible, I worked with a small, agile crew that allowed us to move seamlessly throughout each athlete's day without disrupting their routine. We began by filming interviews inside the UTS Elite Athlete Gym, creating a comfortable environment where Luke and Olivia could share their experiences before we followed them around campus to document everyday student life.

What I enjoyed most about this project was the opportunity to create films that felt honest and personal. Rather than relying on scripted moments, the stories were shaped by following Luke and Olivia through their real routines, allowing their personalities and experiences to naturally drive the narrative.

The result was a pair of engaging films that not only highlight the incredible commitment of these athletes, but also demonstrate how the UTS Elite Athlete Program supports students in achieving success both academically and in their sport.

The project was filmed using a compact professional cinema camera setup with high-quality audio, lighting and stabilisation equipment. This lightweight production approach allowed us to move efficiently between locations while capturing cinematic visuals and clear, professional sound without disrupting the athletes' daily routines.

Final Thoughts

Projects like this are a reminder that the most effective storytelling comes from spending time with people, understanding their world, and capturing the moments that make their story unique. I'm incredibly proud of how these films came together and grateful to UTS Sport for trusting me to bring their vision to life.
